Best Sizes for Zones

What's the most efficient sizes for Zones in the game? I make 5X5 residential and I keep on having the middle of the Zone be undeveloped.

I usually go with 6×4, then 8×8 for the level 2

If you use the dense RCI, buildings might start small, but become larger and fill up the empty spot.
But for the regular RCI, i usually use 4x4 or something.

I use 8*8, and I only place regular residential zones by the seaside. But I got a plugin that has a 9*9 commercial building and I have nowhere to place it.
