I think more building variety is certainly a good idea. It probably just needs some more tweaking, that's all.
Maybe the inhabitants/workers numbers per building are set too low at the moment.

I would opt for something like this:

Suprisingly, Atoiiol43 did not suffer many suprise traffic lights, as it used oneway and highway tiles for most intersections.
