Pro Tip: ALWAYS HAVE A GAME PLAN

This is pretty much "City Management 101" at this point, but I cannot stress this enough: Have a game plan before you start building. For example, you don't want to build an expensive power plant, only to find later that you have to bulldoze it because it's in the way. Before you lay down anything, look around the map you've chosen for building and take note of any good residential or industrial areas you can make use of. Having a little forward thinking can save you a lot of time, effort, and money in the long term.

Also, having a solid foundation to work with in regards to your road map. Oh my gosh, I don't care what city simulator you're playing, it is CRITICAL to have a rock solid foundation to work with in regards to your city's road map. Something you can easily upgrade and adapt as the city grows to avoid heavy traffic congestion. While mass transit can help keep the traffic at bay, eventually you are going to have to start planning smart with those roads, lest you end up with a bridge that's over capacity, or an intersection that can't handle the rush hour traffic.

And for Pete's sakes, DO NOT emulate what Mayor Becky did here. This is a textbook example of how NOT to plan for the long term with your city, in regards to the road map and it's overall layout. If your road map more closely resembles a bowl of spaghetti than a functional network of roads, then it's definitely time to take a step back and rethink your strategy:

So, what processes do you guys normally go through before you start building? Do you glance around the map and try to figure out what can go where before you begin laying down roads? And what process do you use for your road maps? Or do you just dive right in and place things haphazardly and see how things play out, adjusting your building style as needed? I'd love to hear your feedback.

I actually have more realistic way to build. Start with roads, broken grid. Then facilities and zones. And as the town grows, facility needs grow, hence I put lot of time in the placement of the services. You should see how Korilai turned out, not bad, is it?

Heh, not bad. Although I have to imagine you put more thought into your road layout than Mayor Becky did in the image above. And probably weren't distracted with talking on the phone while doing it like she was. Haha!

I'm honestly more of a fan of having an organized grid of squares I can build with, as seen in my YouTube video series on this game. Although for the Urban Planning Guide I'm writing for this game, I am using a new variation of the formula that probably works even better. I honestly can't wait to see the end result.

Is this about road hierarchy?
