Well, what kinda buildings you placed on the start? In the beginning you need to build 1-lvl buildings to make a base for your city (poor people is a bedrock of your city), next - make an industrial or commercial areas for em. Make some parks, police and fire headquarters, medicine, schools and you can achieve the access to middle class and rich people for your city.
For exploring the mechanics of population growth, you can use sand-mode (or sand-mode + Uber for 100 diamond price), that is much easier then classic regime.

If wanna know what you need to build, you can use demand statistics for it and check your economy to monitoring your population and work spaces for em. All your citizens must have enough space to work, earning money to pay you taxes and use your services. If one part of em don't have what em need, they leave your city until you have what they needs.
