I want to be sure about trademarks laws

Hi!
I am trying to make a plugin (and this time I'll really try to take it somewhere) about different airlines. I tried to mangle the names of the different airlines a bit to not violate any trademark law. However, i checkd on internet that trademarks can be considered violate if used or evidently copied by competitors.
If so, am I considered a "competitor" since I'm producing something?
and since this plugin is not for profit, do I have to modify the names of the airlines or is there no need?
