If I use a free image for a plugin, is this copyright?

If you are using free image as a reference, I think it is not copyright

There are several definitions of "free". You have to read the license that's associated with the image.

I know that royalty-free is not free though. Sometimes I wish there are more free public domain pictures that could be used as reference.
