This monument was built by the Dutch government to replace the old monument which had collapsed due to the earthquake that occurred in 1867. Initially the monument was built by the Yogyakarta Sultanate Palace during the reign of Hamengku Buwana I in 1757 as a symbol of people's unity in fighting Dutch colonialism.
