How to make good looking cities?

#1

Post by byxxiaonanhui »

I can make a highly-populated city, but I can't make a good looking city.
I'm thinking of some ideas.
1.Make the city not that dense.
2.Use some parks and trees between the buildings.
3.Build not only dense areas but regular areas.
Anyone (I'm not meaning JustAnyone) have some other ideas?

I think a city with downtown in the middle and the outer you go from the downtown the lower the buildings height is.

I would say first, if you're on sandbox, make an interstate. This highway will serve as a fast way around the city and helps control traffic. Then plan the downtown. If you want a specific skyscraper to stand out and be the tallest place it first in an ideal location close the interstate in the middle of the map. Then start adding skyscrapers that are of lower height and continue from there. If not then go all out with placing skyscrapers, parks, and older looking buildings to add to the more city like feel since most downtowns in cities have historical areas. Then from there, build commercial areas and then residential. Add some industrial in between commercial zones to separate it from residential (though with uber mode this wouldn't be a problem). From there make sure you establish a connection from the neighborhoods to the interstate and keep about half of the commercial areas near the interstate to promote traffic flow through it, and to make it more like a city (in real life most stores stay near highway exits so they can get more people). And add things you definitely need like schools, hospitals, and etc. Also, if you don't want industrial random places in the city, make sure to set aside an area with the industrial AND DON'T FORGET TO add faster roads and connections to other parts of the city for less traffic going to and from the industrial area. If you want a dense city, then don't place or make as many green areas and place lots of buildings close together. Also remember to make lower income and higher income areas separate if you want your city to make sense. And thats pretty much all though I probably missed a lot.

Details is the secret to a good looking city. The more details, the better the city...

Another tip: try, build, not zones, and you're done

Real cities tend not to look good. They are engines of profit and, often, hubris. To function at all, they require much ugliness. Slums, heavy industry, overcrowded centers, and cheap functional stuff built quickly are all but inescapable.

San Francisco, for many years, was darling of the world; visitors praised it as "quaint", meaning old and small. We lived in Victorian walkups and had three-story blocks next to towers. We enjoyed big-city status on a poulation of mere hundreds of thousands. Now we're starting to look like LA. Beautiful don't pay.

Suggest, if you want to build the shining city on the hill, you browse the web; there are many photos. See what you like and model that.

Put taller buildings on the outskirts of the city (like most European cities) and put old-ish buildings in the downtown (again, like most European cities).
This is a recommendation by the way.

For me, I would say that you should put more mid-rise buildings.
