Barangay is a Tagalog word that originally meant boat during the precolonial philippine kingdoms or polities, It is still uncertain whether this is the origin of the modern use of barangay as the smallest political division in the Philippine government.

A barangay is headed by a Barangay Captain and composed of seven barangay councilors (kagawad). Supporting them are the barangay justice committee (lupon) and the barangay watchmen (tanod).

The Philippines is divided into many barangays, which are then grouped into towns, cities, or districts. Barangays vary greatly in population some of the smallest have fewer than 10 residents, while the largest have more than 100,000 people, nearly as many as a city.

This system has its critics, but many also believe the barangay should be retained.
