This monument is to the north of the palace, being part of the philosophical axis that stretches from Mount Merapi, Tugu Golong Gilig, Yogyakarta Palace, Panggung Krapyak, and the South Sea. Because of its long shape and white color, the Dutch call it white paal (white pole). For this reason, to this day, the Golong Gilig Monument is sometimes still referred to as the Pal Putih Monument. This monument was built a year after Yogyakarta was founded, precisely in 1756. The initial shape of this building was a cylinder (golong) with a circle at the top (gilig), so it was known as the Golong Gilig Monument. The form of golong gilig means the spirit of unity between the people and their king. It is also a symbol of the Javanese philosophy of Manunggaling Kawula Gusti which not only means the unity of the people with the rulers, but also the unity of humans with the will of the Creator.
